History of JW Turner

John William Turner known to all as Jack was a rear gunner in Wellington aeroplanes during the Second World War. He left the Royal Air Force at the end of the war and commenced working for himself as a painter and decorator, his prior trade.

Over the next decade, as he started to employ other trades to help him with his business, he formed and incorporated JW Turner (Builders) Ltd in May of 1962. The company grew to encompass all aspects of the building industry.

Originally based in Bearward Street it moved to St Andrews Road in the late 60’s

Due to ill health Jack retired in 1974 and the company was passed over to his son Tony. Having worked with the company from the age of 14 during school holidays and weekends Tony left his position within the banking industry to head J W Turner (Builders) Ltd.

As the company grew, in the late 80’s it relocated to Earl Street followed by a further move to its current premises in Studland Road.

The 90’s saw the Company change its registered name to JW Turner Ltd, omitting the word “builders” as it was felt the company was more than just builders. The Company also began using “Turners™” as its registered logo and trading name.

Turners™ workforce has a core of excellent tradesmen, many of whom have been with the Company over 15 years. In fact our longest serving employee ”Ron Gray” a painter and decorator, started his apprenticeship with us in 1963 at the age of 15. In keeping with family tradition 2 of his 3 sons Stuart and Simon both completed their decorating apprenticeships with Turners™.

2007 saw the arrival of the third generation of the Turner family with Jack joining the management team of the Company. He also had worked for the Company during school/university holidays over the previous 5 years, which as history has proved, is a great way of attaining a good understanding of the “nuts and bolts” of the building industry. Jack came to us following a 3 year degree course at Lancaster University where he attained a Ba Hons in Economics and Business Management.

Over the years the Company has gone from being a one man painting concern to a modern day Company which specialises in commercial refurbishments/alterations to unusual and awkward construction projects.
